Developed activities

In regard of developed activities from the date of its foundation, U.P.T.S.N. has been engaged in the following activities:

November 2000 - U.P.T.S.N. collaborates with the Pontinian Land Museum in classifying and maintenance of malacological fossil of the Museum, with related settlement in expositive cabinets and systematic filing of the material. At the same, U.P.T.S.N. looks after the entomological collections, in regard of the event “Latina and the Malaria”.
2001 year - Permanent exhibition of part of the malacological collection for the Museum on Pontinian Land in Latina.
March 2001 – Lessons of elementary marine biology and malacology for the school “Giovanni Cena” of Latina.
March 2001 – Lessons of elementary marine biology and malacology for the school “V District” of Latina.
November 2001 – U.P.T.S.N. is engaged for the “Sani technical Institute” in the project “Blue School”, together with others locals Association and groups, like the diving centre “Rudy Wolf”, and with the participation of Prof Eugenio Fresi of the University of Rome, and the parternship of “Legambiente” Association. Purpose of the project was to divulge in the schools the knowledge about biology, marine archaeology, and marine life in general.
March 2002 - Lessons of elementary marine biology and malacology for the school “V District” of Latina.
June 2002 – Malacological exhibition in Latina
Summer of 2002 – Research field stage in Albania sea in regard of the bentos fauna of the savage coast of Karabrum, together with the Department of Diving Activities of Albania.
November 2002 – Project “Blue School” for the same school of the precedent year.
February 2003 – Conference and malacological exhibition in Latina together with Malacos Association.
25th June 2003 – Participation to the event “Festambiente” on the theme of “ Sea, resource for an eco-compatible development”. Report of U.P.T.S.N. about the causes of erosion phenomena and the interventions for beach restoration, in relation of the economical and tourist development of the coasts of Lazio region.
5-19 October 2003 - Second edition of the malacological shell show “Gems in the Blue” in the town of Latina with the partnership of local, regional and statal
Institutions. The event is realized together with the Postal Department that give a special postal cancelling, the international shell magazine “The Shell”, artist and dealers. The shell show ha a great success registring the presence of 12.000 visitors in tow weeks.
November 2003 – U.P.T.S.N open the academic year for 2003-2004. Available 54 different courses of every typology.
June 2004 – Beginning of the researches for a project of malacological census along the coasts of the province of Latina with immersions in Astura Tower Cape, and on submerged barriers on sand to control the state of marine life in spot areas of the coast.
August 2004 – Research field stage in greek Zakinthos Island for a period of one month. Purpose of the stage is the study of bentos and malacos fauna of the island seas. The monitoring in made with the technique of the “spot grille”.
The study start from data collected during many past years. The grilles are posed at 30 mt on the sea bottom, and the researchers try to don’t use the air bottles because of the disturb for the animals. Researchers finds a good population of the turtle “Caretta caretta” while the fishing fauna is in great sufferance. The most critical situation is for the Monach sale, that was relatively common in the past years. Cause of this decrement is, probably, the tourism an, above all, the bomb fishing. Results of the research are published on the specialist press and sent to the Italian Ministry of Ambient.
September 2004 – U.P.T.S.N. introduce a project of publication of photographic material in reference to the National Park of Circeo.
October 2004 – Beginning of the project “Gems in the School”. This is the first of three phases of the larger project of “Gems in the Blue 3”. It represent an unique didactic project for the town of Latina, with the main purpose to involve the students to the ambiental and naturalistic themes. Lecturers of U.P.T.S.N. realize frontal lessons in 25 schools of the province of Latina using multimedia material and involving more than 2.400 student of every degree, in a temporal arch of 6 months.
February 2005 – Participation, under the request of the local Insitutitons, to the event “Holiday for pedestrian island”. U.P.T.S.N. stages a stand with a little demonstration of some shell specimens.
6 – 7 February 2005 – Takes places the 3rd edition of the shell shoe “Gems in the Blue” that represent the central point of the program of U.P.T.S.N.. The show is, by now, a central appointment for the town of Latina in regard of the cultural themes of nature and marine ambient.
This appointment is different from the past years, because different sections for other marine classes are introduced. There were, in fact, sharks, echinus, sea stars, crustaceans and corals. There were also, very important shells collections and craft features, besides artists, painters etc. The show had the partnership of local, regional and statal Institutions. More than 7.000 visitors were presents. In this occasion U.P.T.S.N. acquired lot of specialist books in point of the consideration that there isn’t in Latina a specialist library for natural sciences.
July 2005 – Go on the activities of monitoring on the malacos fauna of Latina’s coasts. Researches on particular spots of the coast are made trough diving even in night time and test on fishes.
August 2005 - Go on the activities of monitoring on the submerged barriers. The purpose of U.P.T.S.N. is to analyze the conditions of catching of benthos and fishes on these artificial spots.
November 2005 – on 16th of November U.P.T.S.N. realizes the presentation of the last romance of one of the most important adventure writers and documentary director of the world. In fact the presentation is in regard of the romance “The Bajkal Fenice” of Folco Quilici.
19 October – 21 November 2006 – U.P.T.S.N. organizes the 4th edition of the shell and marine biodiversity show “Gems in the Blue”. The show is, by now, a central appointment for the town of Latina and has the partnership of locals, regional and statal Public Insitutions. For the first time the show comprise a separate section on insects, butterflies and spiders.
The event realize the presence of 6.000 visitors and 2.000 students.

August-September 2007 - Go on the activities of monitoring on the submerged barriers. The purpose of U.P.T.S.N. is to analyze the conditions of catching of benthos and fishes on these artificial spots.

March 2008 – On 7 March 2008 the U. P.T.S.N. involving the presentation of the last novel of Folco Quilici "My Sea". The event has the patronage of the Culture of the Municipality of Latina and the Province of Latina. The meeting takes place at the conference hall of the Palace of Culture in Latina and realize the participation, in addition to many viewers, of the same Folco Quilici and representatives of local institutions. During the presentation movies from the DVD related to the work are shown. The event finish with a discussion open to the viewers and with the responses of the same Foco Quilici.
March 2008 – The U. P.T.S.N. realizes the project "Systema Naturae" consisting in the realization of the natural section of the official website of the Province of Latina. The site (www.systemanaturae-prv.net), that represents an extensive database on plants, animals and natural ambients of the Pontinian territory, is organized in datasheets from hundreds of species represented by more than a thousand pictures.
Agosto 2008 - the U. P.T.S.N. continues the researches on the Greek island of Zakynthos for a period of about a month. The purpose of this research is the study of pelagic and benthic fauna, as well as the malacofauna the depths of the island. Are analyzed, with the system of Grilling and detection of significant spots of the seabed, about 30 km of coastline at depths varying from 0 to 30 m..
March 2009 - The U. P.T.S.N. publish the notice for the international nature photocontest "Instants of Nature - from thousandth to infinity." The competition want to be, for references, for the constitution of the jury and for the amount of the distributed prizes, at the top of the scale of Italian and international similar competitions. The award ceremony will take place during the 5th edition of "Gems in Blue" to be held in November 2009.
